A Wildlife phenomenon

  • SNORKELING WITH ORCAS
  • HUMPBACK WHALES
  • NORTHERN LIGHTS
  • IN SUPPORT OF THE ORCA RESEARCH TRUST

Our cruises in Northern Norway depart from Tromsø, the gateway to the Arctic, situated 350km above the Arctic circle. Tromsø is easily accessible by plane from most European countries. From here we venture into the fjords on board one of our comfortable expedition vessels to find the most beautiful spots Northern Norway has to offer. We pass snow-capped mountains, remote fishing villages and beautiful islands, while at night we gaze at the skies, hoping to see the dancing Northern Lights.

Humpback whales and orcas have been sighted in large numbers feeding on herring. Scott Portelli and Waterproof Expeditions offers great opportunities for whale watching, photography and snorkeling in the crystal clear Arctic waters, which is an experience in itself!

Snorkel with orcas in Norway Arctic

This trip is for anyone interested in orcas, humpback whales, Northern lights and spectacular landscapes. The best time of the year for this phenomena is November which provides the balance between light and access to herring and whales is at its best. The winter days in Norway provide excellent light for photography. We will spend the daylight hours looking for whales and other wildlife and snorkel in the crystal clear fjords of Norway.

We aim to provide you the best possible snorkeling experience in a sustainable way. Our ships are equipped with large zodiacs (inflatable boats) and full polar snorkeling gear. Please note that we are always depending on the weather and wildlife for our snorkeling activities.

If you choose not to snorkel, you can enjoy the phenomena from the spacious deck on board the ship or join the zodiac excursions for up-close whale watching and excellent photography opportunities. We might also go ashore to visit some historical fishing villages that are situated in the fjords.
During the darker hours you will enjoy the warm and cosy comfort of the expedition yacht while our expert guides entertain you with presentations and educational information on wildlife and cinematography and films. Excellent food is served three times a day, with a warm meal during lunch and dinner.

In the winter months Northern Norway is the perfect place for Aurora borealis sightings. With a bit of luck and clear skies you might also witness these amazing northern lights.

Itinerary

The success of our trips is very much depending on the whales and weather conditions. Two things which are beyond our control. However, many years of experience has showed us that the period we operate these trips give the best chances for a great experience. We will alter our plans to take advantage of light, weather, wildlife sightings and other one-of-a-kind opportunities which can vary from day to day. Be prepared for cold but rewarding days out at sea with spectacular sightings and bring a good portion of adventurous spirit. We deal with true wildlife encounters and unpredictable weather conditions. The success of this trip is based on realistic expectations and your personal flexibility.

Day 1 Arrival and boarding

Our guides will be waiting for you at the meeting point in Tromsø and will take you to the ship. Embarkation starts around 4 pm in the afternoon. You will go on board and have plenty of time to get settled in your cabin, explore the ship and meet the crew.
Please note: transfers from the airport or your hotel to the meeting point are not included.

Day 2-6 In search for Whales and Orcas

For five full days we follow the schools of herring and pods of Orcas and Humpbacks in the protected surroundings of the beautiful Norwegian fjords. Two expert guides will accompany you on your whale watching adventures. The bridge of the ship is a great place to look for whales and enjoy the beautiful light and scenery of the Norwegian fjords. Our guides and crew are constantly on the look-out for Whales and Orcas. Whenever the conditions are right, we will take the zodiacs and go out on the water. We go snorkelling when the weather conditions and animals let us.

The combination of wildlife encounters, the beautiful scenery of the Norwegian fjords and the amazing Northern Lights, make this trip an exclusive experience of nature.

Day 7 Disembarkation

Our voyage ends in the same place where it started, in Tromsø. After breakfast aboard the ship, you will saw farewell to the crew and your fellow expeditioners.

Please note: Transfers are not included, you will need to arrange your own transfer or book your transfer through us.
